Experience

Hourly rate for tutoring can be discussed and tailored to individual needs if necessary and mutually agreed. Tutoring in elementary school subjects: reading mechanics, composition grammar and style, mathematics, pre-algebra, elementary algebra, science; High school/College /Professional subjects: business, human resources, writing, editing, business start-up, insurance. I have tutored and taught in the past. I have not worked as a full-time school teacher but I taught as a substitute for a semester. My tutoring experience goes back many years, to a period of about two years after I completed my undergraduate degree, while completing a second undergraduate degree (computer technology). I am the dad of two teenagers and have always been able to help them with their homework, for as long as they've both been in school. In the professional employment setting, I have instructed adults and facilitated group work. I have a passion about helping people find the missing pieces in their understanding of subject matter and helping to close those gaps in order to create confidence. I especially love the learning and discovery process in people of every age, and am able to feel a sense of deep joy and satisfaction when the lights go on for them. I have experienced that when a student misses a very important piece of the subject matter puzzle, they may not realize it enough to even know what questions to ask or what help to seek. My goal has usually been to equip learners with a grasp of what they may have been missing in their understanding. I then encourage additional questions they should ask in order to fill in and catch up when they return to class. Because I learn in overviews and am able to mentally create pictures of how concepts fit together, it frustrates me when someone is teaching or explaining something to me and starts somewhere other than at the top without changing that approach when I ask for a different mode of explanation. I want to know why what I'm about to learn is important, how it applies, examples of how it is used for intended purposes, how it fits with other information, etc. My imagination tells me that other people learn this way too, while others do well with other methods. I just believe it is important for the teacher (tutor) to start by learning -- learning how the student learns and is, therefore, best taught. I have learned how and when to slow down or speed up in explaining, asking questions for promoting self-discovery, and probing for areas of understanding or confusion. I have been able to be both patient and kind, as well as encouraging and challenging as needed, when helping someone to learn. One area in which I particularly enjoy discussions and helping to shape thinking is in regard to business enterprise development -- start-up, small business, corporate entities. The majority of my career experience has been in the corporate world, but my areas of greatest recent learning have been with the challenges of small business.

Hobbies

Hobbies over the years have included color film photography and minor acting, voice work, and modeling. I am known as someone easy to talk with, a great listener, empathetic, and one who puts people at ease. I like to let people finish what they are trying to say and would prefer to hear the whole story before responding. Because of this, I sometimes have a hard time interrupting when I need a break from listening or the situation calls for it, or the person repeats themselves or goes on and on. One of the things I have had success doing is challenging myself with different ways of tactfully interjecting, changing the course of reasoning, or ending a conversation because of other responsibilities and time commitments. Otherwise I am usually at-ease in the give-and-take of starting and conducting a meaningful interaction.
