In Bloomington, Indiana, I worked for Writing Tutorial Services, a division of Indiana University, to help undergraduates as well as graduate students, primarily non-native-English speakers, achieve success with their writing, which spanned numerous disciplines. In earlier years, I tutored elementary school students in writing. My experiences with these ambitious young people have taught me that humility, humor, and approachability are core characteristics of successful tutors, and I try to make all of my students feel comfortable reaching out to me for help. I am one of them, I say--a student whose academic victories have not and do not come easily. Other than working as a tutor, one of the most interesting ways I spent my senior year of university ('14-'15) was by working as an exhibits intern at the local county museum. I got to hold the artifacts!
