Private tutor in Indianapolis, IN
Education
Acting BFA from The Goodman School of Drama/DePaul School of Theatre. I am currently a Teaching Artist with Arts For Learning/Young Audiences of Indiana and have worked with that organization for the past 28 years. In that capacity I have developed many programs, Literature and Music based, as well as Residencies based on Novels for Children by L. Frank Baum and Roald Dahl. I also was a Teacher/Resource Person at The Orchard School 1991-1997. I taught Acting through Literature Classes, as a Resource person I enhanced and Team Taught with many Teachers grades k-8. I believe in enhancing Literature in a creative manner befitting an Actor. I was able to help out in History, Social Studies, Reading, and even Radio Theatre. I have also conducted Lectures on Radio Theatre, which began at Clowes Hall.
Experience
No previous tutoring experience. I would like to tutor because of the one on one experience, especially in Acting and Reading enhancement. Bringing curriculum to life is what I like doing. In Literature, I believe it is important to understand Writers intentions, subject matter, inspirations and their backgrounds. I portrayed James Whitcomb Riley at The Children's Museum, for instance and in researching his life discovered how autobiographical much of his work was. He was not a good student, but what endears him to readers was his ability to never talk down to children, to accept their interests as it related to his own childhood musings. I believe that Books are interactive, living, breathing things. We all act when we read, we embody a book with our voices which come from the Mind's Eye. So making Reading and Comprehension fun & intriguing is what I do. Because I am an Actor, I knew early on that reading was key to being able to pick up a script and become a character. I have been touring in schools throughout Indiana for 28 years now, I understand kids, their innate curiousity and have never lost that sensibility myself. Voice Acting, the ability to be understood by voice alone led me to be in many cartoons for Perennial Pictures, including Crawford The Cat cartoons for pre-schoolers. I play the offstage adult voice who comments on Crawford's many lessons. Inflection is an important aspect in Comprehension and since Reading Aloud isn't covered much in Education, it still teaches one about the importance of using punctuation as a road map.

Hobbies
I am a major bibliophile, as well as a collector of music, radio programs, spoken word recordings and popular culture. My expertise is in Children's Literature. I love finding obscure facts about Authors and in doing so I have discovered a lot about Dr. Seuss, L. Frank Baum, Maurice Sendak and Roald Dahl. I have used my research in teaching and performing, including developing residencies with Teachers. It's getting to the heart of a book that matters, including the eras the book is portraying, the point of view of Literary characters, Author's intentions, any and all aspects of the written word.
